Before you ride, you will need to check with your regional and local vehicle code. A particular area
may have ordinances that limit the use of scooters. These safety rules cannot teach you how to control
direction, speed, or balance. Only a good bit of practice and sound judgment can make you a better and
safer rider.
Preparing to Ride
Your personal equipment and good judgment are the only protection you will have. A safe rider wears a
helmet and also makes a point to wear the proper pads/equipment.
- Helmet
- Elbow, knee and wrist pads
- Gloves
- Always wear shoes
Being seen is very important. Brightly colored, reflective helmets and clothing help make riders more
noticeable.
Check Your Scooter
A scooter needs more attention than a car. The time to find out if there is something that needs
attention is before you ride. Check the following:
- All nuts and bolts
- Steering moves freely
- Brakes and controls for proper operation
- Tires for wear and tear
- Read and understand the instruction manual
- Observe all safety and warning labels on your scooter
Know Your Scooter
Familiarize yourself with the scooter before you ride. Check the controls. Ride very cautiously
until you become familiar with the way the scooter handles. Take turns slowly and give yourself
extra stopping distance.
Body Position
Stand firm but relaxed. Keep weight between wheels. Do not stand too close to the front or lean
too far back. Shift your weight to the rear when applying brakes, and lean toward the front when
accelerating. Keep feet apart for more stability.
Turning and Braking
New riders tend to have more trouble turning and braking than experienced riders do. The only way
to make good safe turns and use brakes properly is to practice. Always approach turns carefully.
THE MOST IMPORTANT SAFETY RULE IS TO FOLLOW THE RULES. MOST ACCIDENTS AND DAMAGE TO SCOOTERS COME
FROM RIDERS NOT FOLLOWING THE RULES. READ INSTRUCTION MANUAL COMPLETELY. BE SAFE AND HAVE FUN.
